Jacob’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion in the solar industry. After completing our Installation Basics Training program (IBT200) in September of 2023, Jacob entered the commercial solar sector with excitement and uncertainty. He describes his experience as a steep but rewarding learning curve, where the construction-like demands of commercial solar required thick skin and adaptability. The most fulfilling aspect, he says, is the lifelong knowledge he’s gained—skills he can pass on to his children and apply in everyday life. From wiring transformers to driving heavy machinery, Jacob’s pride in his growth is tangible, reflecting the transformative impact of hands-on training and real-world application.

IBT 200 gave Jacob a critical edge, equipping him with foundational knowledge that set him apart from peers who entered the industry without preparation. He credits the program for teaching him how to identify equipment and present his work professionally. These skills boosted his confidence and reputation on the job. However, the transition to commercial solar presented challenges, as the program focused primarily on residential systems. Jacob wishes it had included more commercial training, which would have prepared him for the larger-scale projects he now tackles. Despite this, he leaned on his eagerness to learn, overcoming initial struggles with patience and a drive to master his craft.

Jacob’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. Early on, he grappled with the slow pace of learning complex tasks like wiring transformers, frustrated by colleagues who withheld knowledge to protect their job security. Yet, Jacob turned this challenge into an opportunity, vowing to share his expertise freely. Now, as a second-in-command on his crew, he mentors newcomers, teaching them skills that took him years to acquire. His commitment to paying it forward reflects a broader ethos of community and growth that aligns with the solar industry’s push for sustainability and collaboration. Jacob’s story underscores the importance of mentorship in fostering a skilled, supportive workforce.

Looking forward, Jacob is excited about emerging trends like prevailing wage laws and the growing use of large-scale battery storage in commercial projects. These developments promise better pay and new technical challenges, which he’s eager to tackle as he continues his electrical training. His advice to those entering the industry is simple but profound: “Don’t give up.” Jacob’s path—from unemployment to becoming a trusted asset in his company—shows that resilience and a willingness to learn can turn a job into a calling. For our readers, let his story remind us that the solar industry not only offers employment but also a chance to build a sustainable career.
