The project aimed at advancing the <a href=\"https:\/\/berkeleyca.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/Climate%20Equity%20Pilot%20Overview.pdf\">City of Berkeley\u2019s Climate Equity<\/a> Fund goals, and it brought GRID Alternatives Bay Area, <a href=\"https:\/\/watersideworkshops.org\/\">Waterside Workshops<\/a>, and local government together to distribute e-bikes to underserved communities. Edgar said the longstanding support by GRID Strategic Impact Officer Zach Franklin for equitable programs in Berkeley, alongside our HQ\u2019s LAB team, aligned this project perfectly with GRID\u2019s values.<\/p>\n<p>Edgar\u2019s involvement allowed him to hear first-hand participant stories. \u201cMeeting participants and seeing how transformative e-bikes were for their daily lives was incredible,\u201d he said. Edgar also said he enjoyed working with Fellows and building their skills to conduct impactful studies. This collaboration fueled his advocacy for alternative transportation, as participant feedback showed the potential of e-bikes in bridging mobility gaps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cherylderricottestudio.com\/\">Cheryl Derricotte<\/a>, Municipal Artist-in-Residence for Berkeley\u2019s Climate Equity Pilot Program, also played a pivotal role. Her involvement began with the Kala Art Institute\u2019s Print Public Residency. Alongside fellow artist Marcel Pardo Ariza, Cheryl co-created Roadwork, an exhibition reflecting on their 20-month residency. \u201cWorking with Marcel and the Kala team was inspiring,\u201d Cheryl said. \u201cThe City of Berkeley\u2019s partnership with UC Berkeley allowed me to guest lecture &#8211; connecting art and urban development.\u201d Cheryl\u2019s artistic contributions extended to BEEP, where she introduced e-bike recipients to bookmaking and showcased their experiences in Roadwork. She believes artists\u2019 collaboration with nonprofits and governments is vital. \u201cArtists capture humanity\u2019s essence\u2014moments of emotion and celebration that data can\u2019t convey,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Both Edgar and Cheryl\u2019s work underscores the transformative power of interdisciplinary collaboration and proves that equity, mobility, and art can shape a sustainable, inclusive future for Berkeley residents and the Bay Area communities. <\/p>\n<p>The Roadwork exhibition will be at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kala.org\/\">Kala Institute<\/a> until February 14.
