To honor his legacy, this edition of the GRID Alternatives Mid-Atlantic Policy Roundup looks at bills affecting civil rights and voting rights. These are essential matters of justice and dignity. They\u2019re also needed to achieve our vision of a rapid, equitable transition to clean energy that benefits everyone. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gridalternatives.createsend1.com\/t\/j-i-zthlthy-l-d\/\"><em>If you share our vision, please donate to GRID Mid-Atlantic!<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Voting Rights Start with Representation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GRID Mid-Atlantic calls the District of Columbia home. Here, local elected officials have promoted many forward-thinking clean energy solutions. D.C., though, has no vote on federal policy in the U.S. Capitol. District residents\u2019 long demands for <a href=\"https:\/\/statehood.dc.gov\/page\/why-statehood-dc\">statehood<\/a> remain unmet.<\/p>\n<p>This ongoing civil rights violation is partly why the Build Back Better Act is stalled in the U.S. Senate. That act includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2022\/1\/4\/majority-of-voters-still-want-the-build-back-better-act-passed\">popular<\/a> policies for accelerating clean energy and climate justice locally and nationwide. (GRID Mid-Atlantic and our allies haven\u2019t given up pushing the BBBA!) <\/p>\n<p><strong>We Can Overcome Obstacles Together<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act also await Senate approval. Our democracy needs these bills to give every American a voice in government. These bills are being held up by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2021\/3\/25\/22348308\/filibuster-racism-jim-crow-mitch-mcconnell\">filibuster<\/a>, a tactic that has blocked civil rights legislation for decades. <\/p>\n<p>We can solve these issues <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/energy-environment\/588952-our-planet-and-democracy-are-under-attack-if-we-dont-save-both-we\">if we all work together<\/a>. The solutions can truly give power to the people. GRID Mid-Atlantic\u2019s policy efforts aim to advance racial and economic justice through renewable energy and inclusive workforce development. So we\u2019re calling on our leaders\u2014especially in the Senate\u2014to immediately pass voting rights protections. After that, they must pass the Build Back Better Act.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact Your Representatives!<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Do you want to get involved?
