GRID Alternatives Colorado hosted 97 women from across the region during the week of Veterans Day for the 4th annual We Build. Part of GRID Alternatives’ Women in Solar<\/a> program, We Build works to build a diverse, equitable and inclusive solar industry by providing pathways to technical careers for women.<\/p>\n

Over the two days, all-women volunteer teams installed a 40-kilowatt solar system at Flats at Two Creeks<\/a> in partnership with Archway Housing & Services. A quarter of the 78 units are set aside for low and very-low-income veterans, a critically underserved population in the Denver metro area. Participants gained valuable hands-on solar installation experience while working alongside other women that range from seasoned renewable energy professionals to those interested in launching a new career in the industry. <\/p>\n

Why does GRID host We Build?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s voices, talents and leadership are needed more than ever to build a strong and sustainable clean energy industry. According to the Solar Foundation\u2019s Solar Industry Diversity Study<\/a>, women continue to be underrepresented in the solar industry and reported a significant gender gap in wages and satisfaction. In Colorado<\/a>, the solar industry employs nearly 7,000 workers, the 8th most solar jobs in the nation, and the industry is growing. Renewable energy policies, like Colorado\u2019s Climate Action Plan and Xcel\u2019s commitment to 100% carbon-free electricity will drive more growth in the solar industry in the coming years. Strong workforce development programs are key to ensuring workers from underrepresented groups are able to access these careers.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
