The Miteri Birthing Center is located in a remote village of western Nepal, a region with the highest rates of maternal mortality in the country. Though many women depend on the center for basic medical care before, during, and after childbirth, Nepal’s electric grid does not extend to the village due to the mountainous terrain. This International Women’s History month, GRID is raising money to install solar on the Miteri Birthing Center.

With reliable solar electricity, the center will be able to provide 24-hour access to medical care and education to hundreds of women and their families. With self-sustaining power, the staff can extend their care for new mothers with electric medical devices, refrigeration for vaccines, and reproductive health services.

The solar installation will also serve as a training opportunity for Nepali women who are interested in building a career in the Nepal solar industry. Tinkal, who first installed solar with GRID on a project in December, explains,“I have learned from coming here that if you set yourself to do something, you can do anything.”

GRID must raise $20,000 by April 8 to install solar on the Miteri Birthing Center in Western Nepal. Help us improve women’s health and employment in Nepal with the power of solar energy. Support women internationally, this International Women’s Day.
