Part of the workforce development program at GRID Mid-Atlantic is to connect skilled and ready-to-work job trainees to potential employment opportunities in the solar industry. GRID Mid-Atlantic provides hands-on and classroom training in different aspects of the solar industry. Trainees complete racking, roof wiring, and electrical skills workshops and get the full picture of the industry by meeting the clients and participating in the installation process from start to finish.

Terry Shelton and Rhannell Dobson both successfully completed GRID Mid-Atlantic’s Solar Works DC training program and are ready to join the solar and construction workforce. Learn more about hiring our talented trainees by emailing solarworksdc@gridalternatives.org or visiting www.gridalternatives.org/get-training/hire-trainees.

We interviewed Terry and Rhannell about their experience with the Solar Works DC training program and their plans for the future. Here’s what they had to say…

TERRY SHELTONWhat are your plans for the future and have they changed since GRID’s training program?

I’m adaptable, flexible, ambitious, and career-oriented — I’ll go wherever that path leads me. GRID instilled in me something that I didn’t know I had, which is a passion for environmental issues.

What does your dream job look like?

I’d like a job that involves going into the community and talking with stakeholders about the importance of renewable resources. Every professional job I’ve had has included verbal and written communication, reaching to communities, and diagnosing issues.

Do you think it’s important to transition to clean energy? If so, why?

If the new green movement takes on, it will have a big impact. If we can get the government to invest in green energy projects, it will create more jobs, and improve lives.

What are your strengths as a worker?

I’m dependable, I do what’s asked, I ask questions, I communicate well, and I’m trustworthy. On the roof, you have to be aware of what it takes to be on the team. It requires social skills and the ability to encourage your team members to get things done.

RHANNELL DOBSON

What was your favorite part about the training you did with GRID?

Locking all the information into place, including the hands-on work. There was one day where I got my whole Installation Basics Training (IBT) check-off sheet signed.

What are your plans for the future and have they changed since GRID’s training program?

Yes, my plans have changed, this program led me to solar and all kinds of new opportunities.

What is your proudest moment as a trainee?

Graduation and attending the job fair. I’ve been to job fairs before, but at this one, I was more equipped and knew how to be more professional. I learned a lot.

What are your strengths as a worker?

I’m a team player and I work hard until the day is over. I’m also self-motivated and good with time management. I understand how important a customer is and there’s a way to speak to a customer all the time, that shouldn’t change, even though we’re construction workers, it doesn’t matter how you dress, customer service is important.
