Dear friends,

Momentum is building for a successful transition to clean, renewable energy that includes everyone. In September, leaders from around the globe came to the San Francisco Bay Area for a Global Climate Action Summit to discuss how we can change the course on climate change. GRID was there, showcasing how California’s low-income solar policies benefit families and communities and challenging leaders to put equity at the center of their climate change solutions. That same week, Governor Jerry Brown put California on a path to fossil-fuel free electricity by 2045.

The need for action at a global scale is urgent. Last month, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest report saying we only have a short window to avert the worst impacts of climate change. And today, these impacts hit close to home as our staff, clients, and neighbors respond to the wildfires raging across California.

Under-resourced communities and communities of color are the most impacted by climate change and climate-induced disasters, and are critical voices in finding a solution. At GRID, we’re continuing to partner with frontline communities to innovate new programs, technologies and policies that create real on-the-ground impact. We’re addressing clean transportation with two new electric vehicle initiatives, tackling localized pollution and fuel prices at the same time; we helped the town of Walden, Colorado install the state’s first floating solar array to power their water treatment plant and prevent evaporation of their lagoon; and our tribal program is expanding its work helping tribes address energy and resiliency issues with the launch of a new tribal grant fund.

While the movement for climate action is growing stronger by the day, California’s deadly wildfires are a sober reminder how urgent and necessary our work is. We’re committed to getting things done, and are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us so far this year. Your gifts of time, money and enthusiasm keep us growing and innovating toward a healthy future for all our communities, powered by clean, affordable energy.
