{"id":3817,"date":"2017-05-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gridalt.wpenginepowered.com\/the-current\/little-lake-grange-goes-green\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T12:04:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T16:04:13","slug":"little-lake-grange-goes-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/live-grid-wp.pantheonsite.io\/es\/the-current\/little-lake-grange-goes-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Lake Grange goes green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI love seeing dreams becoming reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what facilities manager Richard Jergenson had to say as he watched solar panels go up to the roof of the Little Lake Grange in Willits, California. The Grange, housed in a former school building, plays host to winter farmers\u2019 markets, pancake breakfasts, and other community events, and is home to numerous nonprofits &#8212; like Nuestra Alianza, a community acupuncture clinic, and the town\u2019s radio station &#8212; that serve this largely low-income community in the center of Mendocino County. It also has a commercial kitchen that helps the region\u2019s many small farms add value to their produce and incubates local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jergenson got inspired to get solar for the building several years ago when a neighboring Grange became the first in the county to do it. \u201cThis is Mendocino, and we are solar pioneers,\u201d he said. \u201cI figured if we couldn\u2019t be the first, at least we could be the second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when he found GRID, tabling at an open house. Thanks to equipment donations from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gridalternatives.org\/support-us\/corporate-sponorships\/donate-equipment\" title=\"Link to view GRID equipment partners\">GRID equipment partners<\/a> Jinko Solar and Enphase Energy, GRID was able to do the installation at a price the Grange could afford, and at a size\u201411 kilowatts\u2014that would reduce electricity bills by around 85 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The project got underway in early May after a few rain delays, with a combination of local volunteers, GRID staff and employee volunteers from Enphase Energy. Betsy Sliney, an engineer who does test automation for hardware, was one of them.
