Walking Mountains Science Center is a non-profit science learning center in the heart of Vail Valley. Their mission is to inspire environmental stewardship and sustainability through science education for children and adults. One of their popular programs is their Summer Science Camps, some of which focus on STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Last month GRID Alternatives partnered with Walking Mountains and Holy Cross Energy on our Community Solar project in Gypsum, just 30 minutes west of the Science Center. Walking Mountains brought 10 of its incoming 7th and 8th grade STEM campers to learn about solar technology, GRID Alternatives, and how electricity is transported across the state and into our homes. The students were able to test modules and get up close to our 145 kW community solar project, just as construction was beginning. They also learned about high voltage electricity and how to be safe around it.

“I am extremely excited about this project because it is in line with Walking Mountains’ mission to show and demonstrate sustainability to youth through STEM,” says Amanda Hewitt, the STEM Coordinator for Walking Mountains. “I’m especially excited to get girls interested in STEM careers. STEM and sustainability just go hand in hand together.”
