What do a high school student, city council member, solar professional, and a networking engineer have in common? All are passionate advocates of GRID’s Women in Solar initiative, a program designed to attract women to an industry that has a variety of positions available including sales, installation, and engineering. Perris Councilmember Tonya Burke donned a hardhat and harness and installed side-by-side with members of Perris’ Youth Advisory Committee, a group of youth from ages 13 to 18 who serve as liaisons to city policymakers about issues affecting adolescents and young adults. “What surprised me most [about the installation] was how intimate the whole experience was,” said Gabriella Balucana, a junior at Valley High School and committee member. “We all worked closely together and had the opportunity to see the impact we made for one of our neighbors.”

Perris residents weren’t the only ones out on the job site. Community Relations Director Emily Padilla of Sunpro Solar offered her knowledge and expertise, while volunteer Hanh Hoang offered her energy and enthusiasm. As a long-time engineer in communications, Hanh was looking for opportunities to give back and be a part of the environmental movement. “Green energy is the way to go,” Hanh said. “I’m thankful GRID Alternatives raises the standard of living for our community and provides an easy way to get involved for people from all backgrounds.”

Your next chance to join women like Emily and Hanh is August 26 as GRID celebrates Women’s Equity Day. Start your volunteer experience now by visiting the volunteer sign up page and provide your contact information. Through GRID you will get hands-on installation experience and an opportunity to give back to your community.
