This project marks the first solar homes project for GRID Alternatives’ International Program, and it was a great success! We worked closely with the community to design the project, and each family contributed a quarter of the cost for the system–about $250–a major investment for these farming families. Platanal has no road access and no running water, and the homes are far apart on hilly terrain, making a project a real challenge for volunteers, and also extremely rewarding.

Check out this great video of the project, courtesty of Viridian, or read our El Platanal Case Study to learn more about this project and its impacts on the community.

Watch more great videos about the impact this project is having!

In March 2015, 36 employee volunteers from Viridian travelled with us to the remote community of Platanal, Boaco, Nicaragua to help us light up 40 homes.

[78
[12
19
["post-3021","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-equity-community","content-type-news","focus-area-international-impact-stories

Lighting up Platanal homes - GRID Alternatives

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Article","@id":"http://live-grid-wp.pantheonsite.io/the-current/lighting-up-platanal-homes/#article","isPartOf":{"@id":"http://live-grid-wp.pantheonsite.io/the-current/lighting-up-platanal-homes/"},"author":{"name":"","@id":""},"headline":"Lighting up Platanal homes","datePublished":"2015-03-27T04:00:00+00:00","dateModified":"2026-09-03T16:03:29+00:00","mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"http://live-grid-wp.pantheonsite.io/the-current/lighting-up-platanal-homes/"},"wordCount":146,"articleSection":["Equity &
